Joe Wright's screen adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was just exquisite. I agree that the 1995 BBC Miniseries is the best, but this turned out to be really good! For some reason I like this version better. Maybe it's because it's not so...stiff unlike the 1995 version. This was more fun, lighthearted, and the characters more dynamic. I think the writers and the director didn't follow the book word per word, scene by scene. It's different but still purely Austen.
At the beginning, I was adamant about watching this because Keira Knightley wasn't the actress that I would like to portray Elizabeth Darcy. I didn't think she could pull it off, but I was surprised. She was passionate, her mouth spewing witty remarks, comebacks, and insults. And Matthew McFadyen played Mr. Darcy really well. He might not be as dashing and as arrogant as Colin Firth Darcy, but he portrayed Darcy as shy and awkward which he covered with his pride. He's more vulnerable and boyish. Donald Sutherland as the wry Mr. Bennet and Brenda Blethlyn added color to this movie.
And there was definitly one thing that this 2005 movie version has that the 1995 miniseries version didn't. While there Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth did play their charcters well, they lacked the chmistry thwas present between Keira Knightley and Matthew McFadyen. And this was translated to the sexual tension between the characters. There was this instant attraction between Elizabeth and Darcy when they first saw each other at the ball. And everytime they were in the same room, there were sparks that were just about to ignite. And ignite it did when Darcy first insulted Lizzy and then proposed to her. And in this same scene, Darcy's face drifted closer to Lizzy's as if he was going to kiss her. Lizzy was not at all unaffected as her eyes watches him intensely...I thought her gaze even lowered to his mouth.
But it wasn't just the two major characters that had chemistry. Everyone did. All of them seem to jive, Lizzy with Jane, the Bennets, Bingley and Jane, and even Mr. Collins and Lady Catherine de Bourg.
This movie is brilliant! I really loved this. A blend of comedy, romance. It was also subtly sexy with disheveled Darcy walking towards Elizabeth, who was in her nighgown or night clothes. Matthew McFadyen made me swoon with his awkward and nervous proposals especially with the, "You have bewtiched me body and soul and I love...I love...I love you."
